The USS Midway Museum is America’s most-visited historic floating ship museum. It is dedicated to preserving the legacy and contributions of naval aviation as well as honoring those who serve America in uniform. It is the top-rated attraction in San Diego and hosts more than 940,000 visitors annually. Located in downtown San Diego, it is open daily and also serves as an education resource and a private event facility. We are seeking an Exhibit Maintenance Technician with strong Audio/Visual technical skills and basic maintenance and repair background. This is a hands-on position responsible for ensuring the museum exhibits are in excellent condition and all equipment is functioning effectively.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Preserves, maintains and displays items and exhibit areas.
- Develops and maintains a schedule for maintaining display areas and exhibits.
- Cleans objects, such as paper, textiles, wood, metal, glass, rock, pottery, and furniture, using cleansers, solvents, soap solutions, and polishes.
- Trouble shoots audio/visual and lighting components.
- Performs repairs of exhibits.
- Coordinates with outside vendors for complex repairs and services.
- Order supplies and maintains inventory for exhibit department.
- Responsible for exhibit department deliveries and storage area.
- Prepares necessary documents and compose correspondence.
- Works closely with the department volunteers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Education/Experience:
- Associate degree or higher or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Years of experience in residential or commercial Audio Visual installation/maintenance.
- Prior experience in construction/maintenance.
Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent A/V and lighting troubleshooting skills.
- General maintenance/construction skills and ability to perform basic repairs.
- Ability to operate and use small power/hand tools.
- Ability to operate forklift, and scissor lift under OSHA specifications.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient in MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work independently.
- Able to multi-task and problem solve without supervision.
- Ability to deal effectively with deadlines and time pressures.
- Accurate and detail oriented.
- Team player – ready and willing to help wherever needed or assigned.
- Excellent customer service skills.

Working Conditions:
- Job Conditions/Work Location: Work is performed on board an aircraft carrier. Work schedule is Mon-Fri, 7:30 am – 4 pm with the ability to work occasional evenings/weekends, some overnight travel may be needed.
- Physical Requirements: Constant climbing up/down stairs and ladders; bend stoop, and lift to move and retrieve materials; pull/push lift, and carry up to 40 pounds; reach both above and below shoulder height.
- Equipment Operated: Small power tools, shop bench equipment, janitorial equipment, computer, printer, radio communication, fax machine, telephone, copier and scanner.
- Point of contact for all shipping/receiving questions from internal departments
- Develops and maintains system to track incoming and outgoing shipments.
- Maintain custody records for shipments being held.
- Deliver shipments to departments.
- Custodial maintenance, trash removal, and general labor.
- Operate shipboard equipment.
- Load/unload and move material with lift equipment.
- All other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 1 year related experience.
- Fork lift driving experience and/or lift equipment experience a plus.
- U.S. Navy shipboard maintenance experience a plus.
- Proficient in MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to interact/communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization.

- Job Conditions/Work Location: Work is performed on board an aircraft carrier. Shifts are Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4 pm with flexibility to work weekends/nights.
- Physical Requirements: Constant climbing up/down stairs and ladders; bend stoop, and lift to move and retrieve materials; pull/push lift, and carry up to 80 pounds; reach both above and below shoulder height.
- Equipment Operated: Aircraft elevator, fork lift, man lift, aircraft tow truck, buffer/scrubber, pallet jack, small power tools and janitorial equipment.
- Painting, demolition, scraping, etc.
- Assist in basic construction and plumbing services
- Load/unload event gear with lift equipment
- Operate shipboard equipment
- Perform basic equipment repair
- Clean, dust, wipe, sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; refill restroom dispensers.
- Minimum of 1 year of related experience required
- Shipboard painting experience required
- Must possess a valid Class C California driver license and present proof of a clean driving record, and at all times thereafter, in order to operate a vehicle on USS Midway Museum business
- Assist in basic construction and plumbing services
- Load/unload event gear with lift equipment
- Operate shipboard equipment
- Perform basic equipment repair
- Clean, dust, wipe, sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; refill restroom dispensers.
- Minimum of 1 year of related experience required
- U.S. Navy shipboard maintenance experience a plus!
- Basic knowledge of shipboard electrical, mechanical and auxiliary systems preferred
- Must possess a valid Class C California driver license and present proof of a clean driving record, and at all times thereafter, in order to operate a vehicle on USS Midway Museum business
- 20-25 hours per week, 2-4 shifts per week
- Evening shifts start at 4 pm, weekend hours vary between day and night shift
- $10-$12 hour, depending on experience
- Load/unload event gear with lift equipment

- Assist in basic construction and plumbing services

- Forklift Experience or Certification a plus!
- Basic knowledge of shipboard electrical, mechanical and auxiliary systems preferred

- Clean and sanitize restrooms, using cleansers, solvents, soap solutions, and polishes
- Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; refill restroom dispensers
- Strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors
- Wash walls and equipment
- Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools; buffers, vacuums, brooms and mops for cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, equipment, etc.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Prior experience in custodial maintenance or a related field

Pay: $10-$12 hour, depending on experience
Status: 60 Day Temporary assignment with potential for full time hire after assignment is completed
